MoMinis the creators of Ninja Chicken and Bouncy Bill released yet another old school inspired arcade title called Bert in Space. Bert in Space ,as you might have guessed, follows a young alien who is in [you guessed it again] space!
The story (which is not at all important in a title like this) starts with Bert on his way to a family vacation along his parents when he gets separated from them. He finds himself amongst hostile “other” aliens. As luck would have it, he finds an awesome and ultra-cool robot suit which apparently, for no reason, was left unattended and ready to make some alien sushi–Bert hops in and become a badass alien killer. And that’s as much as you will get from the story which, by the way, is shown in a comic panel style.
The control scheme of Bert in Space borrows heavily from other arcade games but throw in their own gameplay formulas too. There is a joypad which allows movement and a fire button to fire the gun – pretty standard stuff there. Also a dash mechanic is activated when you double tap a direction and a gliding maneuver which kicks in when you hold the up button. All in all the scheme seemed responsive and natural on the touch screen (as much as a touch screen allows).
The gameplay is standard (fair) but is highly addictive and a bit fast too. The game drops you in a “static room” where enemies enter rather than the player. In further stages there are some conveniently placed props which further help your cause. You have to jump, shoot, dodge/dash and glide your way to victory. The early stages are a bit easy to beat but as you go down towards the higher levels, you have to keep your wits around and be quick on you “feet” to succeed. The game provides a fair bit of challenge and becomes quite hectic towards the end. After you clear a stage some “stars” are awarded to you according to your performance.
There are only a few things that put me off about this game. One was the lack of enemy variety which is limited to 4 types. That is fine up till a point but then gets almost mechanical towards the end. Secondly, the lack of stages. But these flaws can easily be discarded by the fact that this game is being offered for free. If you are in for some good old chaotic alien shooting then this is a game made for you.
